TagsTransfersOpinionAbout the authorChris BeattieShare the loveHave your say Woodward’s suddenly talking: Why it’s good for Man Utd & fansby Chris Beattie20 hours agoSend to a friendShare the loveCOMMENT: The timing couldn’t have been worse. He’d set himself up for a right hammering. Mockery. Scorn. Take your pick. This decision from Ed Woodward to go public for the first time in his six years in charge at Manchester United was, ahem, courageous…But in the end fortune, inevitably, favoured the brave. That interview with the United We Stand fanzine. Just weeks after a lengthy and open address to shareholders. It was no PR job. If it had been, the publishing and roll out of it would not have happened over the past week. And thanks to a strong performance from the players against runaway leaders Liverpool on Sunday, there was little room for the cynics to pore over and twist Woodward’s words into another never before considered reason why United are in the state that it is.Of course a thumping at home – and to the club’s most bitter of rivals – could’ve led to a very different reaction. But it can be argued the backlash would not have been as bad as anything that flashed across Woodward’s mind.So the message to United’s vice-chairman exec should be: more of the same please. As mentioned, Woodward has said more publicly in the past month than the support have heard from him for the past six years. And the club, the fans and their relationship are better for it. After Woodward’s conference with United shareholders last month, this column encouraged him to speak more publicly. Our idea was a regular spot on the club’s in-house TV channel. But he went one better.Bypassing the media. Ducking their filter. Woodward went straight to the most valuable stakeholders of them all. And reading through the interview, it appears next to nothing was off limits. And the result is – or at least should be – a far happier supporter base and a less tense atmosphere around the club. Woodward did go into detail – deep detail – on various topics: the overhaul of the scouting team, the position of the Glazers, even the three-year scouting process of Daniel James. And fans should be examining everything carefully. Woodward was effectively giving you the blueprint of what United are now working from.Mistakes had been made. Problems had been allowed to grow, “…recruitment wasn’t at its best in recent years”. But a line’s now been drawn. The plan has been drawn up and put into action. The gist of it being, as this column’s sources have insisted since Christmas, United are going back to their roots. Their traditions.Discussing the prototype of today’s Manchester United signing, Woodward echoed the words of Dave McPherson, the former Hearts and Rangers captain, when discussing with this column the players of his era. It was about being “humble, but arrogant too”. In other words, United are rightly looking back to go forward. As Woodward said, “…we want players to come in who respect their teammates, the club, the history. They must understand that they are creating a legacy by coming to Manchester United. Nobody is bigger than the club.”There should be both a humbleness and an arrogance. Humble when you are on the team coach and you wear the club suit, you do up your top button and wear your tie, you represent the club in the right way. Then you sign autographs for the people who pay your wages.”Then, when you go into the dressing room, you put the red shirt on and you feel arrogant, self assured.”Essentially, Woodward was putting a bit more meat on the bones he offered shareholders – as it should be. And as much as the support can feel a little better about knowing the club’s plans; by being so open about their new approach Woodward also helps his manager in his work.Just as he did on that conference call, Woodward spelt out the reasons for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s appointment and the board’s expectations. Which are fundamentally based around the long-term.”As Michael Carrick said in his book, you want to take the ball, you want the ball in tight spaces, you want a never-say-die spirit. Ole has brought a lot of the discipline back,” said Woodward, revealing he had actually read the recently released book of United’s assistant coach.“Whatever manager we have has to buy into that philosophy and Ole is a walking, talking version of that. Let’s let this play out with Ole in terms of the culture reboot.” Which effectively puts paid to all that talk about Max Allegri’s English lessons. The situation around Mauricio Pochettino and Tottenham. Plus any old tenuous link between United and the likes of Thomas Tuchel, Julian Nagelsmann et al. The stories will be raised and floated. But they’ll also have a hollow ring to them. All thanks to Woodward’s words. Again, the club is in a better state thanks to the vice-chairman going public. This interview was a service to the support. Every United fan that reads it is better informed and has a more clear understanding of where the club wants to go. It may’ve been courageous, but it was needed. And no matter the timing or circumstances Woodward – for the good of Manchester United – needs to do more of it.

The Complete Caribbean study indicates that the US market for the product stands at about US$28 ¬million. A new study on the local castor oil industry is showing significant potential for Jamaican Black Castor Oil in the United States (US).The Complete Caribbean study indicates that the US market for the product stands at about US$28 ¬million.“The potential sales are much higher than I thought they would ever be,” said Private Sector Development Specialist with Complete Caribbean, Frankie Whitwell, who presented the research findings at a seminar hosted by JAMPRO at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel recently.“We have to increase production among a raft of other measures,” he added. In a JIS News interview, Director of the Jamaica Castor Industry Association (JCIA), Shirley Lindo, noted that the findings indicate “the high value of the local castor bean.”She pointed to the need for policies to adequately and clearly define the Jamaican Black Castor Oil and implementation of geographic indicators (GI) to ensure its protection.GI, according to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), is a sign applied to products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. In order to function as a GI, a sign must identify a product as originating in a given place.“We have taken too long to claim this oil for ourselves. It needs protection. I am a producer and I have had a situation where (foreign) companies have undermined my bid because of pricing because the consumers, who do not know what the product is, will go with price,” she said.Vice President of Sales and Promotions at JAMPRO, Claude Duncan, in his presentation, noted that the agency is driving the growth of the local castor oil industry in order to command a greater share of the global market estimated at close to US$4 billion. He noted that the agency, in 2016, commissioned a comprehensive industry study, which indicated, among other things, that Jamaican Black Castor Oil is perfectly positioned to combat rural unemployment, poverty and promote bottom-up, inclusive economic growth.“We then facilitated the formulation of JCIA and to this day we continue to be an advisor. We also house the Secretariat within JAMPRO,” he said.Mr. Duncan said that JAMPRO, which is responsible for promoting business opportunities in export and investment to the local and international private sector, also took persons to market.“We took persons to two major Bonner Brothers (International Beauty) Shows, which is one of the larger cosmetic shows. We went to the show in Atlanta, which was attended by over 30,000 people. We carried them there so that they could understand the market, create connections and introduce their products,” he noted.Mr. Duncan hailed the latest research findings as “another important step that will advance the growth of the castor industry as well as the cosmetic industry.”Complete Caribbean provides technical assistance for projects that enhance productivity and competitiveness of Caribbean businesses. It involves partnership among the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), United Kingdom (UK) Department for International Development, Caribbean Development Bank (DBJ) and the Government of Canada. Commandant of the Jamaica Combined Cadet Force (JCCF), Colonel Errol V. Johnson, says the corps is willing to partner with the Ministry of Justice’s National Child Diversion Programme in keeping children away from the criminal justice system.“We believe that the JCCF activities will suit the National Child Diversion Programme because our programme will find work for idle hands, which will have a positive impact on them (children),” he said at a recent JIS Think Tank. The goals of the National Child Diversion Programme are, among others, to reduce the number of children who are charged with offences and exposed to the formal criminal justice system as a result; increase the use of diversionary programmes that rehabilitate children as a response to crime and wrongdoing; mandate State agencies and encourage non-governmental and community-based organisations to become active participants in providing services and programmes to children; protect the rights of the child in keeping with international instruments and protocols; and empower communities to take a more active role in dealing with child offenders with antisocial behaviours.Colonel Johnson noted that a combined effort between the cadet corps and the National Child Diversion Programme to transform young people who display deviant behaviour will require volunteers. He is, therefore, urging persons to give of their talents and services by volunteering and training with the JCCF.

Kolkata: Calling the Election Commission of India’s decision to curtail campaigning time for the Lok Sabha elections in the state and remove two senior officers as “unprecedented, unconstitutional, unethical and politically biased,” Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee said on Wednesday that the ECI is working at the behest of the BJP, its president Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She also wondered whether the directives were due to the “threat” issued to the poll panel by Shah during a media meet in Delhi on Wednesday morning. The Election Commission announced: “No election campaigning to be held in 9 parliamentary constituencies of Bengal — Dum Dum, Barasat, Basirhat, Jaynagar, Mathurapur, Jadavpur, Diamond Harbour, South and North Kolkata from 10 pm tomorrow (Thursday) till the conclusion of polls”. Home Secretary Atri Bhattacharya has been removed and his work will be presided over by Chief Secretary Malay De. The Election Commission also ordered the removal of Additional Director General, CID, Rajeev Kumar from his posting. Deputy Election Commissioner Sudeep Jain, who is in charge of Bengal, said Bhattacharya “stands relieved” from his current charge immediately, “for having interfered in the process of conducting elections” by directing the state Chief Electoral Officer, which he was not supposed to. He further added that Rajeev Kumar has been attached to the Ministry of Home Affairs and should report to his new assignment by 10 am on Thursday. Bhattacharya had written a letter to the Election Commission complaining about the highhandedness of the Central Forces. Bimal Chatterjee, former Advocate General, said the decision to end the campaign by 10 pm has “infringed the rights of the candidates.” Mamata Banerjee, on the other hand, alleged that the EC has imposed the decision as Modi’s campaign is coming to an end on Thursday. “I have rescheduled my programme. I will address two rallies at Mathurapur and Diamond Harbour and will take part in a roadshow in Behala and South Kolkata. It will be very stressful but I will have to do it.” She further said that it is most unfortunate that those who had vandalised the statue of Vidyasagar have been rewarded. “Amit Shah had come to the city to organize riots. BJP goons had beaten up students of Calcutta University and later destroyed the statue of the great social reformer. There was a riot-like situation. The EC should have issued show-cause notice to Shah. But it did not do anything. She further alleged that Jain, the Deputy Election Commissioner, had asked the police to help BJP host the roadshow. “The destruction of the statue of Vidyasagar has hit the sentiments of the people of Bengal and the EC has taken this decision just to divert the attention of the people,” she remarked. She categorically maintained that the law and order situation is not bad in Bengal. “In the sixth phase, there was trouble at Keshpur and that too because of the Central Forces. They had opened fire and were found campaigning for the BJP,” she added. She also alleged that the EC has reduced the time of the campaign of the candidates as “Nirmala Sitharaman had said that I should not be allowed to campaign.”
LeBron James (Keith Allison/Flickr)In a year full of bold political moves by athletes, LeBron James and several of his Cleveland Cavaliers teammates are refusing to stay at Trump Soho in New York City. The hotel, though not owned by President-elect Donald Trump, is branded with his name and caused a few of the Cavs to seek other accommodations as they prepare to take on the New York Knicks Wednesday, Dec. 7.According to Cleaveland.com, Cavs’ general manager David Griffin said arrangements are being made for what could include up to seven of the 14 traveling teammates to stay at another unnamed hotel. Trump SoHo had been booked ahead of the 2016 presidential election and Griffin noted it is the only NBA-quality hotel that could guarantee rooms for the team’s family and friends in case the Cavs make the postseason.James’ endorsement of former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton explains his unwillingness to stay at the hotel. In October, Atlanta Black Star reported the power forward believed Clinton was the only candidate who understood the struggles of oppressed Americans. In the wake of the Nov. 8 election results, many Cavaliers players have expressed their disappointment. On Instagram, shooting guard J.R. Smith questioned how he would explain the outcome to his young daughter. Echoing ESPN analyst Jalen Rose’s proclamation that NBA teams will stop visiting the White House, reserve forward Richard Jefferson made the same statement on Snapchat after the Cavs met with Obama to celebrate their championship in November. While speaking to Complex last week, Iman Shumpert declared he would not visit the White House under the Trump administration.“I can’t get caught up in the racial, sexist bull—- he’s got going on,” Shumpert said.” That’s his personal thing.”The Cavs join at least three other NBA teams that won’t stay in the Chicago and Manhattan hotels bearing Trump’s name, ESPN reported. They include the Dallas Mavericks, Milwaukee Bucks and Memphis Grizzlies. The Illinois-based hotel, in contrast to the one in New York City, is owned and operated by Trump’s company.
Newcastle United left-back Paul Dummett was gutted to concede a late goal at Watford in their 1-1 draw but says he’s optimistic of facing United in the next game.Newcastle United were well on their way to their third away victory in the Premier League this season after Rondon Salomon gave them the lead in the 29th minute. But eight minutes from time, substitute Abdoulaye Doucouré scored to salvage a point for Watford. The Magpies face Manchester United next on Wednesday, and Dummett fancies their chances against the Red Devils as they look to put the disappointment of the Watford game behind them.“After leading for so much of the game, working hard as a team and defending well, for them to score in the 82nd minute is really disappointing,” Dummett told nufc.co.uk.“The manager said before that every game is a cup final – we wanted three points, but every point we take is another point on the board.“They had a lot of the ball in the first half before we scored our goal. They had a lot of possession in the second half, as well, but they didn’t really cause us much of a threat until their man got free in the box and they scored.Maguire says United need to build on today’s win George Patchias – September 14, 2019 Harry Maguire wants his United teammates to build on the victory over Leicester City.During the summer, Harry Maguire was referred to as the ultimate…“It’s disappointing not to hold out and pick up the three points, but we have to be positive and move on to the next game.“Last season, we beat Manchester United and went on a bit of a run after that, and hopefully we can achieve the same as that this season.“They’ve got a new manager and they’ve won a few games, so their confidence will be high coming to play against us.“But, I think Manchester United have always found it hard playing at St. James’ Park against us.“We’ll be doing our best to try and take points off them – hopefully three – and hopefully kick on the same as we did last season.”
